:: Post-Active Duty Student Deferment ::

Contact your loan holder to discuss your options and download a Military Deferment Request Form PDF. You or your representative must request the deferment and provide documentation to your lender establishing eligible active duty service and school enrollment. Documentation may include a copy of your military orders or a written statement from your commanding officer or personnel officer stating you're serving on active duty.

Eligibility Criteria

Maximum Time Limit: Up to 13 months following the completion of active duty military service or from the date you re-enroll in school on at least a half-time basis, whichever comes first

This deferment is available if you're called to active duty service while enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school at the time of, or within six months prior to, your activation. The deferment ends on the date you re-enroll in school on at least a half-time basis or on the date the 13-month period ends, whichever comes first.

Unlike the Military Service Deferment, a Post-Active Duty Student Deferment doesn't require you to have been activated during a war or other military operation, national emergency, or performing qualifying National Guard service during a war or other military operation, or national emergency. To be eligible, you must be serving on active duty on or after Oct. 1, 2007.

If you qualify for both a Military Service Deferment and a Post-Active Duty Student Deferment, the six-month military service deferment period and the 13-month post-active duty student deferment period apply concurrently.

A representative can request this deferment on your behalf and the lender must grant the request if you meet the eligibility requirements. If you've already received a military service deferment, the post-active duty student deferment can be granted without an additional request.
