:: In-School Deferment ::

This deferment is for the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. Contact your loan holder to discuss your options and download an In-School Deferment Request Form PDF.

Eligibility Criteria

Maximum Time Limit: None

An In-School Deferment covers both full- and half-time study at an eligible school. A lender must grant you an In-School Deferment if they get a written or verbal request from you and documentation of your eligibility, which can include written enrollment verification from the school.

Enrollment includes any combination of courses, special studies, research projects or work experiences the school considers a course of study. Full- or half-time enrollment is determined by each school. Enrollment in only a correspondence program is considered half-time enrollment. Medical interns and residents (except dental interns) can't be certified as enrolled students for the purposes of In-School Deferment eligibility.

To get an In-School Deferment, you must be attending a school that's either eligible to participate in Title IV programs or is operated by federal government agency, such as a service academy.
